From a viewpoint inspired by queer and postcolonial theory, bossiness becomes an analytic concept with which power relations between images and their viewers can be not only described but also changed. Power relations are set in motion and “the image” is given the chance to oscillate between art object, visual fantasy, and metaphor. The book invites contemporary artworks to appear in an experimental setting. Political protest disguised as lovesickness (Sharon Hayes), vacuum-cleaning “beds” (Helen Chadwick), a pole-dancing panda (Elodie Pong), the body as abstract art (Jakob Lena Knebl, Hans Scheirl), and humanoid figures in potentially violent scenarios (Laylah Ali) shift the question of “what is queer art?” towards “What can queer art achieve?” The book accompanied the event series The Power of Images, Queer Art, and Politics that was organized and run by Antke Engel and Jess Dorrance in cooperation with Renate Lorenz. With essays by writers including Bini Adamczak, Nana Adusei-Poku, Kerstin Brandes, Coco Fusco, and Füsun Türetken.
