Eva Grøttum: paintings and drawings
In the fall of 1987, RealismusStudio exhibited new works by Norwegian artist Eva Grøttum. The show was meant to be the first in a series dedicated to women artists working with conceptual approaches, but this idea was dropped due to structural changes within the working group—the only other show in the series featured British artist Rose Garrard. Grøttum, who had been living in Berlin since 1980, advocates respectful treatment of the earth and of nature by humans, worried by the lost awareness of the need to protect them. In the catalogue, Toril Smit describes her approach to painting as follows: “The concept is based on creating a dialog between three different levels in the picture: the animal, abstract symbols/patterns, and a background, often a forest motif vanishing into the background.” The color illustrations present Grøttum’s often large-format painting, supplemented by a brief biography and notes by Frank Wagner.
