Über die Zersetzung der Fotografie
(ex machina. About the deconstruction of photography)
The exhibition ex machina aimed to focus attention on current artistic approaches to the medium of photography. In this context, Zersetzung (deconstruction, breaking down) meant something transitioning from one state to another. The work in the catalogue by artists including Simone Ackermann, Kurt Buchwald, Hans-Peter Feldmann, and Rivka Rinn deals explicitly with the translation of photography into other artistic genres and technical media. In her foreword for the photography work group, Andrea Lange writes: “Established patterns of perception are playfully interfered with, boundaries are explored and rendered pervious by infringement. The traditional functions and appearances of photography are turned on their head.” Each artist is presented on a two-page spread with text and image material, with additional essays by Franz John & Udo Thiedeke and by Hubertus von Amelunxen.
