Elektronische und konkrete Musik 1945–1955

Gray areas/worlds of color. Electronic music and musique concrete, 1945–1955
The exhibition Grauzonen/Farbwelten, hosted by the Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg in 1983, included around 700 exhibits from the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, design, photography, literature, journalism, music, and history. The working group wished to offer a counterpoint to the idealization and mystification of the postwar years and draw attention “to things that have been repressed and forgotten, to overlooked contexts,” as the foreword to the main catalogue puts it. In addition to the exhibition, there was an audio slide show, a panel discussion, videos about some of the featured artists, and two concerts on March 9th and 16th. This booklet, produced in cooperation with West German public broadcaster WDR, contains portraits of composers from the music program—including Oskar Sala, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, and Iannis Xenakis—and a text by musicologist Klaus Ebbeke offering an introduction to electronic music.
