Islands & Ghettos
This catalog published by Verlag für moderne Kunst Nürnberg was produced jointly by the nGbK and Heidelberger Kunstverein for the exhibition of the same name. The show looked at strategies of territorial in- and exclusion in twenty-first-century cities like Dubai and Caracas that exemplify phenomena of urban and social exclusion with their mix of slums and luxury neighborhoods. In the catalog, the documentation of the exhibition is preceded by a theoretical section with city views, floorplans, and maps illustrating the emergence of geopolitical spaces, participatory architectural practice, or comparisons between societal structures in the Gulf states and European models. The participating artists and urbanologists, including Atelier Van Lieshout, Büro für kognitiven Urbanismus, Alice Creischer, Harun Farocki, Emily Jacir, and Javier Téllez, are each presented on a two-page spread with a short biography, a text on the featured work, and illustrations.
