New Urban Publics
Art in the Underground 2022/2023
Art in the Underground is a two-yearly open and anonymous competition for art in public spaces with references to the Berlin subway. It originated with Plakate für den Frieden (Posters for Peace), which were presented at Alexanderplatz subway station in 1958; since 1992 the competition has been organized by the nGbK.
The edition New Urban Publics focused on the transformation of social practices in digital and analog public space. Based on the idea of the square as a place of encounter and the common good, Kottbusser Tor, Strausberger Platz and Rotes Rathaus with its subway stations served as starting points for the selected artistic interventions by Irene Fernández Arcas, Sunny Pfalzer, Julieta Ortiz de Latierro, image-shift, Liminal Beast of Prey and Chargé.
Art in the Underground 2022/23: New Urban Publics was conceived and realized by Lorena Juan, Marenka Krasomil, Isabelle Meiffert, Sandra Teitge and Mirko Winkel.
