Outdoor Systems, Indoor distribution
This publication, initiated by RealismusStudio, documents the exhibition of the same name by Julie Ault and Martin Beck in the summer of 2000 at the nGbK, planned and designed with the show’s conceptual and visual premises in mind. The catalog is structured by installation views—as Ault and Beck write in their foreword, these pictures “extend the ‘image of the show’ beyond the single master view which is customary in art-historical representations of both artworks and exhibitions.” The photographs show many angles and viewpoints, with constant changes of scale that emphasize the spatial dimension of leafing through a catalog. Short texts form a glossary of buzzwords like “supergraphics,” “interstate,” or “instant city.” Outdoor Systems, Indoor Distribution was a temporary arrangement of images, graphics, videos, fixtures, and texts produced on site, actively engaging the exhibition space at the nGbK.
