Shared.Divided.United
Germany and Korea were both frontline states in the Cold War, also sharing the fate of being divided. This catalog accompanied the exhibition of the same name that took place at the nGbK, the Gesellschaft für Künstlerische Forschung Berlin, and in the former Schlesischer Busch border watchtower on the Flutgraben canal. The show combined contemporary art with historical documents, photographs, excerpts from interviews, and archive materials. This concept is mirrored in the publication, where essays on themes like “Korean labor migration to Germany,” “Reconstruction assistance and educational migration between the GDR and North Korea,” or “The migration of intellectuals and border-crossers in the Cold War era” alternate with historical texts and photographs. The fifteen featured artists, including Duck-Hyun Cho, Kane Do, Harun Farocki, Changwon Lee, Sunmu, and Florian Wüst, are each presented over four pages with an introductory text, short biography, and illustrations.
